Here’s a simple hack, you can use your debit or prepaid card for as long as it’s Visa, Mastercard, Diners, JCB, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, etc. Actually, we haven’t tried first hand the other brands but we’re sure of Visa and Mastercard. If you’ve used others, we’d love to hear your experiences and suggestions in the comments section below.

UPDATE 2/28/15: We’ve getting feedback that their prepaid cards don’t work with Uber but (Visa or Mastercard) DEBIT cards are accepted. Let us know your experience below! 🙂

Also, you can enroll more than one card for your Uber payments. You can even enroll a card under a different name. We’ll cover card enrollment in a different post. Example, if your company has a corporate card (name different than yours), you can enroll this and use this to pay for your official trips. You can even use a friend’s card (of course, with their consent!) or even your parents card.

DISCLAIMER: Kids, please don’t do this without your parent’s consent! And you didn’t get the idea from this blog. Hehe!

    • Hi Lynn, I’ve been receiving some comments about their prepaid cards (Visa or Mastercard) not being accepted by Uber. We’re speaking from experience that our debit Visa card works well. Maybe you can directly ask Uber Manila support (support@uber.com). Let us know how it goes, we’d love to hear your experience as well. 🙂

      • i have asked the support directly
        the below is the response.

“Sorry to hear about the trouble adding that payment method, Jeffer.

Some cards and methods are not compatible with our billing processes and can’t be used with Uber. If you have another payment method available, you should try adding it directly from the app. We have a number of options available – including most standard credit and debit cards.

The following pages may be helpful, and if I can answer anything else to help get you going, let me know.”

        – i believe they could not charge more when clients are using prepaid cards. ( just my thought)

  2. Globe GCash Mastercard doesn’t work with the Uber App. It accepts the card during registration but rejects the card during actual booking.

    • Hi, Thanks for the feedback. Apparently based on other comments as well, prepaid cards are not accepted. Thanks for sharing the info. Will update this post accordingly.

    • Yes I found that out first hand last night. I’m pretty pissed off. If anything..most intelligent businesses don’t accept credit cards but accept debit as well as refillable cards since they automatically receive the payment..unlike credit cards. It would of been my first ride. They’re getting a extremely poor rating and I’m telling everyone I know what a joke of a “service” they are. I shouldn’t have to get a pay pal account. Need to upgrade your system..it’s inexcusable.

  3. Uber will NOT take a prepaid Bluebird American Express card, but you will have a devil of a time figuring that out! Even though there is money on it, should be perfectly usable, won’t take it. So can’t use Paypal either apparently??? Very frustrated in trying to set up account for intellectually disabled son to use to come home from his job when busses not running. We’ve been ripped off repeatedly by taxis and thought this was the solution. Got prepaid card as best money solution. Have spent hours trying to get info on what the problem is. He cannot handle a debit card, so were out of options? Any suggestions welcome

    • I’d just report them to the BBB. They’re going to be forced to improve their payment system sooner or later or go under since it was even on the news that less and less people have a bank account and smart people don’t use credit cards either. Pretty sorry so called business if you ask me. I guess you just get fired when you can’t get to work. They should be shut down …obviously not a real business. Kind of makes me wonder if they only want credit cards so they can compromise or even hack your account. Anyway, they are screwing themselves out of money cause a prepaid card is pretty much guaranteed money. Yea they’re brilliant lmfao

  6. I tried using BDO Debit Cash Card (under Mastercard) and it is still having trouble processing my payment. I am a bit confused as it shouldn’t let me use the service and let alone register if my card is invalid, right?

  9. when signing up on your website, it only gives you the credit card option for registration. How do i register my BDO debit card on your website? could you please walk me through it or direct me to the page where it gives one the option to register debit cards? Thanks.

    • Hi Mara,

The process is the same. Just identify the card number of your debit or prepaid card. Remember only those cards with Visa, Mastercard or JCB, etc are accepted. If your debit card or prepaid card shows only the logo of BDO without these logos, it cannot be used to register with Uber.

  12. From experiences with me and my girlfriend, uber will accept a debit card that is backed by a bank but will no longer accept prepaid cards. My girlfriend was using an aline prepaid card with a visa logo for a few months with no issues, but uber randomly deemed her card invalid around March of this year. Same goes for paypal accounts that are funded by such cards. Really was an inconvenient change

So I added a metrobank mastercard debit card instead. it got accepted and i successfully booked a ride. This morning i noticed a notification that i have an issue in my last ride. Upon reading it shows that my fare last night wasn’t charged to my card. My card has more than enough to cover the fare. Pls advise on this. I would like to pay my driver asap.

  20. Recently created an account because of the BPI free ride promo. Unfortunately, when I tried booking several times for a ride, my BPI More Fun Visa prepaid card was always deemed invalid. I had high hopes that I could use the free ride promo since the promo is only until October. Really can’t rely on advertising nowadays.

  21. I signed up for a BPI prepaid card just for us to be able to use the service. However, when I needed to book a ride my card was deemed invalid. I am pregnant and uber is the best option that I have when my husband is not available to pick me up. Is there a way uber can fix this? My friend introduce me to this service and she uses the same prepaid card. We were still able to book a ride last August but how come we can’t now?

    • Apparently because their system is out of date and defunct. That’s gonna probably go against the prosperity of their businesses..especially considering there’s less and less people that have bank accounts or credit cards when you don’t have to anymore..I was like…you’ve got to be f#$@!&# kidding me lol.
